District Wayfinder Competition

Posted on 16 July 2017

The Wayfinder Competition is a district camping and scouting competition for patrols of scouts.  Originally, this was a national competition in the 60s sponsored by Wayfinder shoes.  That tradition was still going strong when Malcolm was a scout in Norfolk in the 80s.

Scouts camp as patrols in patrol areas and cook their own meals.  All day Saturday, and on Sunday morning they take part in “incidents” run by scouters from within the district.  These last one hour each and test scouts ability in core scouting skills – e.g. Navigation, pioneering, signalling, problem solving, first aid, fire lighting.  Patrol areas are also inspected 3 times over the course of the weekend and these inspections contribute to the patrols’ scores in the competition.  The overall winner will be the patrol with the highest combined score from inspections and performance on incidents.

This year’s Wayfinder competition was the biggest yet with 9 patrols entering from 6 troops.

Congratulation to 1st Ashtead Gardner Meerkats  for returning and retaining their first place. (don’t worry the scouts in this patrol move to explorers this year)

New elements introduced this year were a scored Campfire Skit or sketch, the Trading post open for all of the competition and the Saturday night meal was a pointed 3 course meal.
